10 Ways to Find the Courage to Live Life on Your Own Terms
And become the master of your destiny!
Most people will never live life on their own terms.
They'll stay stuck in jobs they hate, relationships that drain them, and lives that feel too small.
Not because they can't change, but because they're afraid to try.
I get it.
Taking control of your life is scary. Choosing a different path feels risky.
But after years of creating my own freedom lifestyle and inspiring a few others along the way, I can confidently tell you that courage isn't about being fearless.
It's about taking action despite the fear.
Here are 10 ways to find that courage and start living life your way:
1. Start Small But Start Now
The biggest mistake I see people make is waiting for the perfect moment to begin. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s never coming!
It’s never the right time to start a family
It’s never the right time to quit your job
It’s never the right time to retire
It’s never the right time to start that extra side hustle
It’s never the right time to pack up everything and travel the world!
You just have to decide and make the leap.
You don't need to sell everything and jump on a plane tomorrow like I did. Start with small steps that build your confidence:
Take a weekend trip alone
Start a side project
Learn a new skill
Save your first $1000 for your freedom budget
Each small win builds your courage muscle and proves you can handle change.
2. Calculate The Real Numbers
Fear often comes from fuzzy thinking. When you don't know exactly what you need, everything feels impossible.
When I realised how little I actually needed to live like a Queen in Thailand, spending my days on white sandy beaches and eating fresh mangos and coconuts straight from the trees (I kid you not!), it truly shocked me!
I’m from the UK and we were brought up on the old Bounty adverts.
I always thought I would need to be a billionaire to live my ‘dream’ life!
Not even close!
To make your dreams more of a reality in your mind, instead of a far off hazy vision too massive to truly contemplate, get crystal clear about:
Your monthly living costs in your dream location
How much runway you need
What income streams could support you
Your actual minimum viable lifestyle
3. Create a Safety Net (Without Getting Trapped By It)
There's a difference between being smart and being paralyzed by planning. You need some security, but not so much that it becomes an excuse to never start.
Smart preparation looks like:
Building an emergency fund
Creating multiple small income streams
Having some backup plans if it all goes awry
But be sure to set a deadline. Don't let preparation become procrastination.
4. Surround Yourself with Proof
Nothing builds courage faster than seeing others succeed.
When I first started, I devoured stories of people who'd created location-independent lives. My biggest catalyst for action was of course Tim Ferriss - 4 Hour Workweek!
But every story I consumed showed me what was possible.
These days, finding your inspiration is easier than ever:
Join digital nomad communities
Follow people living your dream life
Connect with others on the same path
Share your journey and attract like minds
Remember: if others can do it, why not you?
5. Reframe Risk
Most people think choosing an unconventional life is risky. But let's talk about real risk:
The risk of looking back with regret
The risk of never knowing what could have been
The risk of staying in a life that's too small
When we jumped on that plane to Cyprus, heading into the great unknown and a completely different life, the biggest risk wasn't in trying something new. It was in staying exactly where I was.
6. Build Location-Independent Skills
Courage comes easier when you have options. Start building skills that give you freedom:
Learn to create digital products
Develop your writing or design abilities
Master online marketing
Build a portable side hustle
Focus on skills that travel well and solve real problems.
7. Practice Courage in Small Ways
Courage is like a muscle - the more you use it, the stronger it gets. Start with small challenges:
Strike up conversations with strangers
Try something new each week
Face one small fear daily
Make decisions without overthinking
Each tiny act of courage builds confidence for bigger leaps.
8. Listen to Your Future Self
Imagine yourself 10 years from now. What would that version of you want you to do today?
When I'm faced with a scary decision, I ask myself:
Will I regret not trying?
What would my braver self do? (Funny story, I usually ask what would Ripley do? (Sigourney Weaver in the Alien franchise - she was a badass!)
What story do I want to tell?
Let your future self guide your present choices.
9. Create a Transition Plan
You don't have to leap blindly. Smart transitions might include:
Testing your new lifestyle with trial runs
Building your side hustle while still employed
Creating stepping stones to your goal
Setting clear milestones and deadlines
The key is movement. Keep taking steps forward, no matter how small.
10. Take Aligned Action
The easiest way to find courage? Do things that feel true to you. Don't copy someone else's path - create your own.
Focus on:
What energizes you
Where you naturally excel
What problems you love solving
The lifestyle that fits YOUR dreams
The Final Truth About Courage
The truth about finding the courage to live life on your own terms is that it's not a one-time thing.
You don't suddenly become fearless. Instead, you learn to act despite the fear.
Every major step in my journey - from that first move to Cyprus, to launching businesses, to exploring new countries - came with its own set of fears. (Still does today).
But each step has also brought more freedom, more growth, and more proof that I can handle whatever came next.
Your turn.
Pick one small act of courage today. Take one tiny step toward the life you want. You don't have to see the whole path - you just need to see the next step.
The life you dream of is waiting on the other side of those small, brave choices.
Make it happen!

After being stuck in a 32 foot RV with my spouse and two dogs for nearly a week during the blizzard of 2025 along the gulf coast, I ventured out to the beach today, by myself!!!!
One small step... yes it’s cold.
Yes it’s windy.
Yes the air is crisp.
Finally a few minutes of quiet solitude. A few minutes alone to think and plan a future for my retirement years.
