For the rapidly growing community of nomads and solopreneurs scattered across time zones and continents, the holiday season brings it’s own set of unique challenges and opportunities.
While others rush home to familiar traditions, we find ourselves creating meaning in ever-changing locations.
Here's how to make this Christmas special, no matter where you are in the world;
1. Embrace the Global Christmas Experience
The beauty of being a digital nomad during Christmas means you get to experience the holiday through different cultural lenses.
When we arrived in Thailand some 14 years ago, as a primarily Buddhist country they hadn’t even heard of Christmas, let alone did anything to celebrate (or exploit) it.
Nowadays the Thais celebrate better than the Westerners!
Whether you're in Chiang Mai's warm December, or Berlin's snow-covered streets, each location offers its own interpretation of the season.
This year, consider:
Documenting local Christmas traditions in your current location
Sharing these unique experiences with fellow nomads and family back home
Creating a photo essay or blog post about how different cultures celebrate the season
Many people in your home country will never experience the illuminations in Tokyo or the Christmas Markets in Germany, so share the love!
2. Build Virtual Communities When Physical Ones Are Far Away
As nomadic solopreneurs, our work often means choosing independence over traditional office holiday parties.
However, this doesn't mean celebrating alone:
Join existing nomad communities on platforms like Reddit's r/digitalnomad or Facebook's "Digital Nomads Around the World" where holiday meetups and virtual events are often organized
Reach out individually to other nomads you've met during your travels - even a simple "Thinking of you this holiday season" message can spark a meaningful conversation
Use coworking space bulletin boards or local expat groups in your current location to find others staying in town for the holidays
Host a casual virtual coffee chat and invite other nomads you've connected with online
Join platforms like InterNations or Meetup.com where you can find local expatriate holiday celebrations in your current city
Book a Christmas Dinner in a large hotel or at a local restaurant if available and make the most of the festive cheer
You might find yourself in a country that doesn’t celebrate Christmas at all, or even recognise this as a holiday season. If that’s the case, relish the quiet and rest, or use the time to immerse yourself in the local community.
3. Switch Off and Give Yourself a Real Break
As nomadic solopreneurs, we often find it harder to switch off than our 9-to-5 counterparts.
There's no office closure forcing us to down tools, no set holiday schedule, and usually no team to cover while we're away.
In fact, December can often be one of our busiest months - planning for the year ahead, setting up new systems, catching up on admin, creating holiday promotions...
The freedom to work anytime can quickly become working all the time.
Add in different time zones, clients celebrating holidays at different times, and the pressure to maintain momentum - and suddenly that festive spirit feels pretty far away.
This season, try something different.
Schedule proper downtime. Block it out in your calendar like you would any other important commitment.
Set up systems ahead of time - autoresponders, scheduled content, clear client communication about your availability.
Use the quiet periods (when clients are celebrating their holidays) to reflect on your achievements and plan for the year ahead.
The beauty of being a solopreneur is that you can create your own traditions.
Maybe your perfect Christmas is a morning yoga session on the beach followed by afternoon client calls. Or perhaps it's completely switching off for two weeks.
The choice is yours!
4. Stay Mentally Strong During the Holiday Season
The holidays hit different when you're far from home.
That perfect Instagram feed of nomad life doesn't show the moments when Christmas carols in a foreign mall suddenly make you miss family traditions.
Or when the excitement of exploring new places gives way to a quiet evening alone.
But nomad life has taught me that traditions can travel.
Here's what works for us:
Create your own portable traditions. My husband & I start every Christmas Day with a sausage sizzle - whether that's in a chilly UK kitchen, on a Thai beach, or in a Brisbane park
Build a routine that travels. Small familiar moments ground you wherever you are in the world
Look for connection everywhere. Jump into local coworking spaces, respond to Facebook group meetups, or join hostel gatherings
Spread the celebrations across time zones. Start with morning video calls to US family, catch European cousins at lunch, end the day with locally made friends
Embrace the change. Our new traditions often become more meaningful than the ones we left behind!
5. Gift Better with Less
One of the gifts of nomad life is learning to live with less. When your life fits in a suitcase, you quickly discover what really matters.
The holidays are a perfect time to embrace this minimalist mindset:
Send digital Christmas cards filled with highlights from your year of adventures. Your friends and family get to share your journey, and you skip the paper waste
Gift experiences instead of stuff. A cooking class in Thailand, a surf lesson in Australia, or a food tour in Vietnam creates memories that last longer than any gadget
Shop local markets for those special physical gifts. Supporting local artisans not only helps the community, but gives your loved ones something truly unique from your travels
Create digital photo albums or travel journals to share your year's experiences. These become treasured keepsakes without taking up physical space
Host virtual gift exchanges with other nomads where everyone shares a local experience or tradition from their current location
The best gifts don't need extra baggage allowance!
6. Planning Your Next Year of Adventure
The quiet holiday season is perfect for mapping out your next chapter.
While everyone else is winding down, us nomads are often dreaming up our next moves - literally!
For 2025, think bigger than just destinations. Think about:
Where will your business thrive? Maybe Chiang Mai's peaceful temples for focused creation, or Berlin's buzzing tech scene for networking
When will you be where? Plan around conferences, events, meetups that could boost your business
Which seasons work best? Skip Bali's rainy season, catch Australia's perfect winter, dodge Europe's tourist crowds
How will you grow? Schedule skill-building workshops in places known for your industry, join masterminds, or create your own events
What's your ideal work rhythm? Maybe slow travel with 3 months per base, or faster moves with 6-week stints
2025 could be your year of strategic adventure - mixing business growth with life-changing experiences.
