I knew when I stepped onto the yellow bucket - which was to take me 180ft into the sky for me to then willingly throw myself off - that I was only coming down one way.
My friend and travel buddy Rachel had urged me to have a go on the mini jump over the pool first, but as was my personality in my 20’s, if I’m in for a penny, I’m in for a pound!
As we ascended above the Faliraki coastline, I vaguely remember the guy throwing instructions at me as he checked the bungy cord around my ankles.
‘When we get to the top, I’ll shout 3,2,1 BUNGY, then you jump’
‘Ok’, I shouted back, my heart jumping in my chest.
As we got to the top I stepped up to the gap in the bucket and knew I had tenths of a second before my fear would take over.
I heard the guy say ‘3’…
Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone Doesn’t Always Mean You’re More Comfortable!
My elders used to tell me fear would shrink with age.
The more you step out of your comfort zone, the more comfortable you’ll get - ‘they’d’ say.
But now I know fear doesn’t go away — it just shifts.
In my 20s, I was happy to throw myself out of a crane, but terrified of commitment.
In my 30s, I was happy to birth a bowling ball but broke out in a cold sweat at the thought of starting a business.
Now, in my 50s, I’ll backpack solo across countries, but the thought of hitting “record” on a video now terrifies me.
There’s always a new challenge, always a new comfort zone to step out of — and the older we get, the harder those leaps can feel.
That’s why so many people think making money from a laptop on a beach is for the 20-something crowd. They believe they need to reinvent the wheel or master a whole new skill set.
But I promise you, you don’t.
You’ve already spent decades honing skills, gaining experience, and solving problems.
Here’s how to turn your knowledge into cold hard cash that can fund world travel!
1. Own Your Expertise
Write down 5 things you’re brilliant at.
These could be skills, strategies, or lessons learned over years of doing what you do best.
(Hint: What do people ask you for advice on?)
Some examples might include;
I love tinkering with websites & anything technical,
I love photography,
I love home decor,
I spend all day discussing the future of AI & technology,
I love travel & Instagram,
I’m a keen gardener and enjoy helping my neighbors with their gardens.
I love baking.
I’m a natural-born coach and love to help people feel great about themselves,
I‘m a fitness fanatic and love talking about nutrition
I love training my dogs and help friends with theirs
I’m a natural parent and love helping teens get the best out of themselves
I love fiction writing
2. Pick a Format
Decide how you want to share your expertise.
Here’s some options;
Video Courses
Newsletters
Podcasting
Consulting
A blog or YouTube channel
Even an ecommerce store — I have a friend who is a master at jigsaws. With her passion, you think she could build a $10k a month selling jigsaws? You bet she could!
Start small — pick one that feels doable.
3. Take the First Step
Sign up for a platform, send an email to a potential client, or outline your first course.
The only way to build momentum is to start moving.
4. Join a Group or Forum Full of People Doing What You Want to Do!
Want to start writing online and growing a newsletter business? Sign up to Substack and follow successful writers.
Want to start an ecommerce business? Follow successful store owners on YouTube and watch every video.
Want to sell books on Amazon KDP? Join FB groups specifically for Amazon kindle sellers.
5. Lean Into Your Fear
Feeling nervous?
Good. That means you care.
Use that energy to fuel action instead of freezing.
The Only Thing to Fear is Fear Itself!
The decades of expertise and worldly knowledge you have can’t be taught.
Anything you don’t know, like uploading a video to Udemy or publishing a book on Kindle can easily be learned via groups, youtube videos, even ChatGPT.
The only thing holding you back is your fear of the unknown. And yet, you know so much more than you think you do.
Believe me everything you need to generate $10k a month online and more is already within you.
You just have to step up to the edge of the bucket, take a breath, and leap.
Great advice Jo - 2025 is my year to put this in action & its going to be a great year!
